Apple recently announced its support for NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), India's homegrown navigation system, at India's 'Techade' event.
The Minister of State for Electronics & IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, stated that by the end of 2025, all smartphones would be NavIC-compatible. Apple follows other brands like Xiaomi, Poco, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus in incorporating NavIC into their phones.
Chandrasekhar hinted at potential cashback incentives for smartphone manufacturers using Indian-designed or Indian-made NavIC-supporting chips.
This aligns with the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost the IT hardware industry.
He also noted that Indian company Accord Software & Systems has developed NavIC chipsets, making it feasible for automakers to integrate NavIC into their built-in navigation systems.
The government envisions smartphones and automobiles using NavIC alongside global navigation systems like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, and QZSS.
NavIC, developed by ISRO and operational since 2018, offers superior accuracy in urban areas and dense foliage compared to GPS.
Integration of NavIC into smartphones and automobiles is expected to enhance location-based services' accuracy and reliability, especially in areas with weak GPS signals.
Potential benefits of NavIC include improved accuracy, reliability in challenging environments, lower power consumption, and enhanced security for critical applications like autonomous vehicles.
